Gold Medal Award Recipients

Prof. Dr Md Zinnatul Alam

Dr. Md. Zinnatul Alam was born on 29 June 1950 at Charghat Upazilla under Rajshahi district. He obtained BScAg degree and MScAg degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University, and PhD degree from University of Arkansas, United State of America. Dr Alam served as Associate Cane Entomologist in Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute, Scientific Officer at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute and Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur. He was general Secretary and president of the Bangladesh Entomological Society, and he is an editor of Bangladesh Journal of Entomology. Dr. Alam supervised 65 MS and 17 PhD students in his teaching carrier. He has 150 publications in national and international journals. The Bangladesh Entomological Society awarded him a gold medal in 2022 for outstanding contribution to entomological research and education.

Dr Md. Nurul Alam

Dr. Md. Nurul Alam was born on 18 January 1951 in Dhaka. Dr. Alam served as Lecturer in Bangladesh Agricultural Institute, Dhaka, Principal Scientific Officer, Chief Scientific Officer, Member-Director and Executive Chairman at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council. He also served as founder Director of Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF). He was president of the Bangladesh Entomological Society. Dr. Md. Nurul Alam has 30 publications in national and international journals. The Bangladesh Entomological Society awarded him a gold medal in 2022 for outstanding contribution to entomological research.

Prof. Dr Md. Emdadul Haque

Dr. Md. Emdadul Haque was born on 30 April 1949 at Gazaria Upazilla under Munsiganj district. He obtained BScAg degree and MScAg degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University, and PhD degree from Dhaka University, Bangladesh. Dr. Haque served as Scientific Officer, Senior Scientific Officer, Principal Scientific Officer and Chief Scientific Officer in Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. Dr. Haque has 100 publications in national and international journals. He received Gold Medal Award 2009 by Bangladesh Rodenticide Manufacturers Association, and Bangladesh Entomological Society Gold Medal Award in 2011.

Prof. Dr Md. Mohosin Ali Sardar

Dr. Md. Mohosin Ali Sardar was born on 11 September 1944 at Rani Nagar Upazilla under Nawgon district. He obtained BSc. Ag degree and MScAg degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University, and PhD degree from University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. Dr. Sardar served as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. He also served as research fellow at Berlin, Germany under DAAD Scholarship. He was general Secretary of the Bangladesh Entomological Society. Dr. Sardar supervised 65 MS and 4 PhD students in his teaching carrier. He has 72 publications in national and international journals. He authored two text books on entomology. The Bangladesh Entomological Society awarded him a gold medal in 2014 for outstanding contribution to entomological research and education.

Dr Md Amirul Islam

Dr Md Amirul Islam was born at Ruppur village under Pabna district. He obtained BSc degree from Dhaka University and MSc degree from Texas A & M University, USA, and PhD degree from University of Philippines Los Baños, Philippine. Dr. Islam served as Lecturer at Bangladesh Agricultural Institute, Dhaka, then Scientific Officer, Senior Scientific Officer, Principal Scientific Officer and Chief Scientific Officer in Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. He was Director General at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute. He also served in the Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control. Dr. Islam has 100 publications in national and international journals. The Bangladesh Entomological Society awarded him a gold medal in 2011 for outstanding contribution to entomological research and extension.

Prof. Dr Bhuiyan Nurul Islam

Prof. Dr Bhuiyan Nurul Islam was born on 01 January 1935 in Chnishpur village under the Narsingdi district of Bangladesh. He obtained BSc degree and MSc (Zoology) degree from Dhaka University, and PhD degree from Kyoto University, Japan. He served as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in the Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. He was Dean of the faculty of Agriculture of Bangladesh Agricultural University. His research interest was Insect Ecology and Pest Management. Dr Islam supervised a number of MS and PhD students and published many research articles in national and international journals. The Bangladesh Entomological Society awarded him a gold medal in 2007 for outstanding contribution to entomological research and education in Bangladesh.

Dr Syed Nurul Alam

Dr Syed Nurul Alam was born on 29 January 1960 in Old Babu Para under Saidpur upazila of Nilphamari district. He obtained BScAg degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh, and MS and PhD degree from University of Philippines, Philippine. He has around 37 years of experiences on research and development works on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and other Institutes of home and aboard and pioneer in development of bio-rational pest management strategies of different crops in Bangladesh. He also has working experiences as Project Director/ Coordinator/ Principal Investigator of 20 donor aided (EU, USAID, DFID, FAO, JDCF etc.) international projects and with different international research and academic institutes, viz. International Maize & Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines, World Vegetable Center (AVRDC), Taiwan, Greenwich University (UK), Penn State University (USA), Virginia Tech. University, USA and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), India. He supervised 05 PhD and 14 MS students. He was the Publication Secretary, General Secretary and President of the Bangladesh Entomological Society. Dr. Alam has so far published 173 articles in the national/international journals, books, booklets, reports etc. He received several national and international awards and in 2007 Bangladesh Entomological Society awarded him a gold medal for outstanding contribution to entomological research in Bangladesh. Presently he is working as Senior IPM Coordinator at CIMMYT- Bangladesh.

Dr Md. Abdul Hamid Mia

Dr Muhammad Abdul Hamid Miah was born on 1 November 1946 at Kalihati Upazilla under Tangail district. He obtained BScAg degree and MScAg degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University, and PhD degree from Imperial College of Science & Technology, University of London, United Kingdom. Dr. Miah served as Scientific Officer in Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, Senior Scientific Officer at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Principal Cane Entomologist at Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute, Member-Director at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council, Director General at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Director General at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, and Executive Chairman at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council. He also served in the International Rice Research Institute. He was president of the Bangladesh Entomological Society, and he is an elected Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. Dr Hamid Miah has 50 publications in national and international journals. He authored two reference books on pest management, one chapter in an edited entomology book, written in Bangla. For his outstanding contribution, he received Independence Award 2013, Bangladesh Entomological Society Gold Medal Award 2004, Outstanding IRRI Alumni Award 2018, and Standard Chartered Bank and Channel I Agro Award 2023 for his Lifetime.

Dr ANM Rejaul Karim

Dr ANM Rejaul Karim was born on 29 February 1941 in Khulna. He obtained BSc degree from University of Dhaka, MSc degree and PhD degree from University of Philippines, Philippine. He served as Research Assistant in the Department of Agriculture, then Entomologist, Senior Entomologist, Principal Entomologist and Chief Entomologist, and Director (Research) in Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Dr Karim was Coordinator of South Asian Site in Bangladesh, Integrated Pest Management Collaborative Research Support Program, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, USA. He worked as an adjunct faculty member of the Entomology Department of Bangabandhu Shiekh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University. He supervised three MS and two PhD students. He was the Vice-Presidents and General Secretary of the Bangladesh Entomological Society. Dr Karim wrote a book on insect pests of rice, and published 90 research articles in national and international journals. The Bangladesh Entomological Society awarded him a gold medal in 2004 for outstanding contribution to entomological research and education.

Dr Md Abdul Karim

Dr Md. Abdul Karim obtained BScAg degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University and MScAg degree from American University of Beirut and PhD degree from Bowling Green State University, Ohio, United State of America. Dr Karim served as Lecturer at Doulatpur Agricultural College, Khulna, Scientific Officer, Senior Scientific Officer, Principal Scientific Officer and Chief Scientific Officer, and Director in Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. He also served as national consultant of UNDP. He was president and general secretary of the Bangladesh Entomological Society. Dr Karim has a number of publications in national and international journals. The Bangladesh Entomological Society awarded him a gold medal in 2002 for outstanding contribution to entomological research.

Prof. Dr. Monawar Ahmad

Prof. Dr. Monawar Ahmad was born on 25 July 1935 in Chowdala village under Gomostapur Upozilla of Chapai Nawabganj district and died on 22 October 2021. Dr. Ahmad completed   his BSc (Hons.) in 1956 and MSc in 1957 from Dhaka University. He awarded the PhD in 1967 from Texas A & M University, USA. He also worked as a post-doctoral fellow in Cornell University, USA in 1979 and also worked as Commonwealth Academic Exchange Fellow in 1983 at IARI, India. He was Lecturer in the Bangladesh Agricultural Institute, Dhaka for four years. Later, Dr Ahmad served as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in the Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. His research interest was Insect Taxonomy, Morphology and Pest Management. Dr Ahmad published 66 research articles in national and international journals. He was the founder President of the Bangladesh Entomological Society and Editor-in-Chief of the Bangladesh Journal of Entomology. The Bangladesh Entomological Society awarded him a gold medal in 1996 for outstanding contribution to entomological research and education.
